Rio Rancho K-9 Ben gets treatment for his pinched nerve.
K-9 Ben is a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois working for the Rio Rancho Police Department in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. A Dual Purpose K-9, he is certified in both narcotics detection and patrol services.
His handler, Officer Daniel Fleming, explains how Ben is “truly a great police service dog” who loves to play during his off time. In fact, Fleming describes how, despite his age, “Ben seems to think he is still a puppy.”
Several weeks ago, Ben suddenly collapsed while on duty, and unable to walk due to his pain. He was soon taken to the Sunrise Animal Clinic for x-rays, which showed areas of concern across his spinal column.
Referred to the Animal Neurology & Imaging Center in New Mexico, Ben received an MRI and a Spinal Tap. Before the MRI, however, Ben’s pain did not stop him from acting like a puppy. Ben determined that the matt on the MRI table used to keep animals stable would become his new toy. In fact, the vets allowed Ben to hold his new toy during the MRI scan.
The neurologist determined that Ben was a very healthy dog and provided medicine to help treat a pinched nerve. Officer Fleming explains how a few days later, “Ben’s pain subsided, and he was back to work.”
Fleming describes how the National Police Dog Foundation “has always been a huge help to the Rio Rancho K-9 team.” The National Police Dog Foundation provided the Rio Rancho Police Department with the funds to cover the cost of medical bills.
The National Police Dog Foundation is proud to ensure that Ben had the necessary medical treatment to get him back on track.
The ongoing medical care for K-9s can be very expensive and most K-9 departments simply do not have the funds for the ever increasing medical costs for K-9s. The National Police Dog Foundation commends these K-9s for their dedication and service, and is proud to assist in the costs of Medical Care for K-9s.
