Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Stanford, KY welcomes Luma

Lincoln County, Stanford, KY gets Luma.

K-9 Luma is Black Labrador Retriever working for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office in Stanford, Kentucky. Five months ago, the 2.5-year-old K-9 was purchased by the sheriff’s office. In April, she and Deputy Michael Mullins underwent training at Southern Coast K-9 in Volusia County, Florida. Mullins describes their training as “awesome” and a crucial time for both “bonding with your dog and learning to read their behavior.”

At the end of April, Luma began officially working for the department. Assigned to patrol, the K-9 is also certified in narcotics detection and tracking. On a day-to-day basis, Luma can be found scanning cars on traffic stops, searching for illegal narcotics, and tracking for missing or lost persons.

Deputy Mullins explains how Luna’s purchase would not have been possible without the “very overwhelming” support from the National Police Dog Foundation and community support. In addition to reaching out to the National Police Dog Foundation, the agency applied for a matching grant through the National Association of Chiefs of Police. While these funds contributed toward the purchase of one dog, substantial support from the community allowed the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office to purchase two single-purpose K-9s.

Mullins describes how “there was a lot to learn as a new handler,” so he and Luma continue to train every day. In just a month, the K-9 is already making a name for herself—since they’ve hit the streets, Luma has located several thousands of dollars of both drugs and paraphernalia. Deputy Mullins describes his bond with Luma as “unbreakable,” calling his work “truly the best job ever.”

The National Police Dog Foundation is proud to have contributed to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. Our foundation looks forward to seeing Luma’s skills progress and watching her continue to positively impact her community.

The purchasing of K-9s is very expensive and most K-9 Units simply do not have sufficient funds.
